Our QCUP squad cemented second place on the Intrust Super ladder with a gutsy 24-16 victory over the Central Comets in Rockhampton last Saturday night.
Match Report
The Magpies finished with only 14 fit player’s in what was a nightmare trip for the defending club champions, with James Stuart (ankle), Cy Lasscock (knee) and Josh White (liver) succumbing to serious injuries throughout the match.
With the scores locked at 10-10 at half-time – both teams were in the hunt – and late in the game it seemed the Comets were on track to record back-to-back wins.
Five-eighth Nathan Barraclough continued to impress in only his second game for the Comets and his late try 12 minutes from fulltime had the home fans cheering.
But the Magpies showed why they have been a top-six side all season with a try to Quentin Laulu-Togagae sealing the result for the visitors.
Match Preview
The Comets produced arguably the season’s most impressive performance in front of the ABC Television cameras last weekend in their 30-6 dismantling of the Wynnum Manly Seagulls. But the challenge for the Comets now is to back it up and get over the top of the classy Souths Logan Magpies.
The Magpies are beginning to hit their straps and appear a genuine top three outfit in 2010.
Their finals aspirations will face a searching examination in Rockhampton, with the Comets the talk of the town throughout the week after that eye-catching performance.
Nathan Barraclough’s inclusion at five-eighth appeared to spark the Comets last weekend and the Emerald Tigers junior is sure to be a marked man when he steps out for just his second Intrust Super Cup outing of the season.
