Some of their own supporters had written them off following an error-riddled first-half display, but the Souths Logan Magpies managed to steal a 14-12 win over the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Davies Park on Sunday.

Magpies Snatch Late Victory

Before the round, Magpies coach Mark Beaumont had called on his players to lift for the game against the desperate ‘Gulls, but it seemed early on that the match-up was going to be a boil-over, with Tweed Heads outplaying the home side in every department.

Things started well for the home side with a try to Jarrad Kennedy in the opening minutes of the half, but that only served to fire up the visiting Seagulls side.

Tweed Heads – who underwent a major reshuffle of the troops before kick-off – hit straight back with Cody Nelson crashing over to score.

After converting his own try to give the Seagulls the lead, Tweed were soon on the attack again.

Following a scrum at the Magpies end of the field, the Seagulls swung it left to where Nelson was lurking and the big backrower crossed for his second try of the afternoon.

After that early spark, it became a grinding affair on the park, with the soggy conditions making it hard for both teams to get ahead.

While both sides guilty of some scrappy play, their efforts in defence could not be faulted with all attacking raids for the remainder of the half being shut down.

Going into half-time 12-4 ahead, Tweed were looking on track to break their hoodoo, but both coaches would have instructed their teams to cut down on the errors.

After the break, it looked like Tweed would continue on their way, with Souths Logan giving up ground through a string of penalties – mostly through frustration.

But against the run of play, an ill-directed pass on the Souths Logan line was intercepted by Reece Robinson who ran the length of the field with Tweed flyer Shannon Walker in hot pursuit to score.

With the scores at 12-10, it became Tweed’s turn to feel frustrated, with penalties handing over the ball to the Magpies and giving them another chance at the Tweed Heads line.

Tweed were clinging on to the hope they would record their first win of the season, but with only three minutes until the final siren – the mountain of work being done in defence took its toll and David Milne managed to hold on to a Marc Herbert pass out left to steal the win.

It was the sixth straight loss for the Seagulls.

They face a tough road trip next week to Stockland Park to take on the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles on Sunday.

Match Preview

Tweed Heads will be striving for their first win of the season when they travel to Davies Park for a clash against one of the most formidable teams in the competition.

Although new coach Ben Anderson is yet to notch a win after five games, his injury-hit team hasn’t been far off the pace.

Last week they pushed the unbeaten Wynnum Manly team all the way before losing 34-22. Shannon Walker’s form at fullback has been one of the positives and the electric No. 1 will trouble the Magpies if he finds open space.

Souths Logan have no shortage of pace out wide either, with noted flyers David Milne, Michael Brophy and Reece Robinson all named in a super backline. Souths Logan coach Mark Beaumont also has the luxury of being able to call on Quentin Laulu-Togagae and Justin Carney off the bench.
