Souths Logan held off a determined, fast finishing Redcliffe to secure a 30-24 win down at a wet blustery Dolphin Oval on Saturday night. A good crowd got value for their money as play went from one end to the other. Tom Clark-Kennedy was first to score after good build up in the Dolphins half. Not to be outdone though the home team replied soon after as a result of some miscommunication in defence.
The Magpies lifted from this and created a host of scoring opportunities. Unfortunately not all were capitalized on with the scrambling defence of Redcliffe just being enough to deny the Souths boys. Elisha Papule showed the way with a strong barging run over the try line. A try to Nick Doyle and then Elisha for his second took the teams into half time 24-6.
Injuries benched two of the Souths boys for most of the game. Again the team was called upon to show their fighting qualities. A Redcliffe try from dummy half brought out the best in the Palupe boys well supported by Nick Doyle to lead the way. Elisha was rewarded with his hat trick when another bumping run carried defenders over the try line. Accurate goal kicking from Myles Dagley helped provide a 30-12 scoreline.
The increased workload however was telling on the young Magpies who were becoming tiring and suffering the effects of cramping. Redcliffe with a full bench maintained the pressure and crossed for two more tries with some 8 minutes still remaining. A steel in the black and whites saw them mount several more attacking movements only to have their tired legs run down. Jake Downington all but sealing the game only to lose the football reaching out short of the tryline. It was enough in the end to keep Redcliffe at the other end from their tryline and run the clock down.
An inspirational effort from all the boys exemplifying the Magpie spirit.
