                        Slick Seagulls Swoop on Magpies

TWEED Heads staged an amazing second-half fightback today to stun the Souths Logan Magpies in their dramatic round 13 Queensland Cup clash.

Inspired by a strong display from Titans powerhouse Daniel Conn, the never-say-die Seagulls overturned an 18 point deficit to score a memorable 26-24 victory over the defending premiers at Cudgen.

Souths Logan led 24-6 at one stage in the second half but they couldn’t close the door on the resilient Seagulls.

The home side piled on the points in the final 15 minutes with a wonderful display of attacking rugby league to grab their sixth win of the season and a share of sixth spot along with Norths and the Sunshine Coast.

A Kingi Akauola try in the 78th minute, followed by an easy Brad Davis conversion, sealed the thrilling come-from-behind victory.

Despite trailing by three converted tries, Tweed coach Steve Lacey was always confident that his team could get in a position to win the game.

“Three of their tries came from kicks, so they only really penetrated us once,” Lacey said of the Magpies.

Lacey said both teams played some “fantastic football” in a physical clash.

The Seagulls have now won three out of their last four games to emerge as a genuine top six contender.

“The boys have just got that bit of confidence back and self belief,” Lacey said.

“I said to the boys ‘it just goes to show what you can do if you have faith in yourselves’.”

Titans enforcer Conn did his chances of an NRL recall no harm, playing all but 10 minutes of the torrid encounter to win the players’ player award.

Brock Hunter, Jake Leary and Bodene Thompson were also strong for the Seagulls, who had just two fit men on the bench in the second half after losing key pair Geoff Holcombe and Ryan Simpkins to injuries.

The match finished under a cloud of controversy after Josh Dugan (Souths Logan) and Joel Brown (Tweed Heads) were sent from the field late in the second half for alleged head butts.

Tweed kept its composure amid the drama to run down the star-studded Magpies.

Souths Logan would have moved into top spot on percentages had it won today’s clash.

But Paul Bramley’s men will have to wait at least another week for a chance to draw level with the league leading Central Comets.

Souths Logan plays the Ipswich Jets at Briggs Road next Saturday.

THROW out the form guide, forget what the stats say.

Sometimes in football when a team is thrown the ultimate test, they’ll do the unthinkable.

Reigning Queensland Cup premiers, Souths Logan Magpies sent an ominous reminder to the rest of the league after belting competition pace setters Central Comets 48-12 on Saturday at Blackwater.

The top-of-the-table clash didn’t live up to the heights predicted as the Magpies scored 38 unanswered points in the second half to prove that you can’t keep a good team down for long.

Heading into the encounter on the back of two losses from their last three matches, the Magpies found their best form against the competition’s surprise packets to snap the Comets’ 10-game winning streak.

Coach Paul Bramley said he regretted his comments after last week’s devastating 14-point defeat to Northern Pride, when he was reported to say that his Canberra Raiders contingent might as well not have got off the plane.

“I regret it now, when they (the journalist) rang straight after the game, I was a bit emotional,” an honest Bramley said.

“It wasn’t just them (the Raiders contingent), it was a team effort and I targeted the Raiders guys I guess because they’re the more professional ones, but I shouldn’t have.

“I spoke to the Canberra boys and things have moved on.

“If the team plays poor, the whole team plays poor, and they were professional enough to understand and I couldn’t fault one of them this weekend.”

After a frantic opening 25 minutes, the Magpies enjoyed the bulk of possession, but couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard heading into the sheds with a slender 10-6 lead over the Comets.

The Comets hit the lead just after oranges, but the extra work load caught up to the Comets as the Magpies ran riot in the final 20 minutes scoring seven tries.

“We embarrassed ourselves last week after a poor effort, and we turned up to training on Tuesday night with a different attitude and saying we won’t do it again,” Bramley said.

“The week built up nicely.

“I wasn’t confident of winning the way we did over the best team in the comp, but we certainty knew if the Comets were going to beat us, they had to play their best game.

“Talking to their staff after the game, they were still happy with their performance.
“We just put on our best defensive effort and our best half of footy for the year and it was one of those days it all came together.”

Setting up the victory was the defensive effort from James Stuart on the league’s most dangerous centre, Karl Johnson.

The 20-year-old South Tuggeranong junior scored a double, but it was his ability to shut Johnson down that earned great praise from Bramley, proclaiming a future in the NRL is not out of his reach.

“No team has been able to handle Karl Johnson, but every time Karl had the ball Jimmy (Stuart) came and shut him down,” he said.

“It was his best all round game this year.
“He’s the perfect prototype centre – nice and tall and athletic – he’ll play in the NRL without a doubt.”

The Magpies remain second on the Q Cup table just one win behind the Comets.
Bramley’s men have a well deserved break this weekend before facing Tweed Heads on Sunday, June 14.

                Norths Sizzle in Centenary Classic

THE Norths Devils have withstood a determined fightback from an understrength Souths Logan to record a crucial 26-20 victory on a monumental day for rugby league in Queensland.

With a big crowd on hand to celebrate 100 years of club football, the Devils put on a show in the opening 40 minutes of the round nine Queensland Cup clash at Bishop Park.

Norths raced in four tries to lead 20-0 at half-time.

The Magpies conceded the opening try of the second half, but in an amazing turnaround, the 2008 premiers hit back with a stunning burst of four tries in 10 minutes to be within striking distance of an extraordinary victory.

However, Souths Logan couldn’t get any closer in a tense final 15 minute period as the Devils knuckled down to the task.

The Devils’ victory – their fifth of what is turning out to be promising campaign – has the Nundah club firmly entrenched in the top six with the halfway mark of the season fast approaching.

Norths built their latest victory on the back of a sparkling first half performance.

The Devils were the first to score in Saturday’s clash when Gideon Mzembe received a great cut out pass from Matt Gillett and sizzled down the left touch line to ground the ball in the 4th minute.

The 4-0 lead soon became 10-0 when Ryan Hansen found himself on the end of a superb pass from centre Ben Hurrell to score untouched next to the posts.

Hurrell leapt high into the air to take a bomb and instinctively kept the ball alive with a great pass to Hansen.

With the Devils forwards making easy metres, hooker Jay Aston chose the perfect time to run.

Aston sliced through the heart of the Souths Logan line and linked with Asher Elemani, who sprinted away to the try-line for a 16-0 lead.

It became 20-0 on the stroke of half-time when Josh McGuire broke out of a Phil Dennis tackle and crashed over to score.

Faced with a huge deficit and without their star-studded Canberra Raiders contingent, the Magpies could easily have thrown in the towel upon the resumption of play.

But the Magpies dominated a large chunk of the second half, despite conceding an early try.

It was two proven performers who got the Magpies back in the contest.

Josh White ran a great line and received a well executed pass from Dennis to add some much needed spark to the contest.

Further rapid-fire tries from James Stuart, Liam McDonald and Shea Moylan narrowed the margin to six points.

But the Magpies came up short and they have now lost their spot at the top of the Queensland Cup table.
